{"id":1356,"date":"2015-11-15T12:19:46","date_gmt":"2015-11-15T12:19:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tjfire.co.uk\/?p=1356"},"modified":"2016-01-20T10:21:12","modified_gmt":"2016-01-20T10:21:12","slug":"ifeda-survey-highlights-risks-of-online-extinguishers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tjfire.co.uk\/index.php\/ifeda-survey-highlights-risks-of-online-extinguishers\/","title":{"rendered":"IFEDA survey highlights risks of online extinguishers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Independent Fire Engineering &amp; Distributors Association (IFEDA) member\u2019s survey has highlighted risks of on-line purchased fire extinguishers.<\/p>\n<p>In almost 80% of cases it was found that extinguishers purchased via online sources were installed into buildings without receiving the required \u2018commissioning service\u2019 as specified by British Standards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of other common errors included:<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Extinguishers placed into ready to use locations by untrained persons without discharge hoses fitted<br \/>\n\u2022 Inappropriate extinguishers placed in areas to cover the risks present<br \/>\n\u2022 Carbon dioxide extinguishers placed into service without swivel horns being correctly secured.<br \/>\n\u2022 There were even examples of extinguishers which had leaked their contents during transit and were then unwittingly placed into service totally empty.<\/p>\n<p>The survey also highlighted that up to 60% of businesses and properties that had \u2018self\u2019 installed fire extinguishers did not meet even the basic requirements of BS5306 Parts 3 and Part 8.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are risking their own lives to save a few pounds by purchasing fire equipment online, not installing extinguishers correctly could lead to a dispute with insurance companies and could even lead to a prosecution under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order\u201d Natalie Rees Managing Director of T. &amp; J Fire Stated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Independent Fire Engineering &amp; Distributors Association (IFEDA) member\u2019s survey has highlighted risks of on-line purchased fire extinguishers.
