If you have lived or worked in the Welwyn and Hatfield borough, it is likely that your home or workplace is equipped with one of our fire or security products… You’ve probably also our their red, white, and orange vans out and about!
Recently, T.J. Fire & Security celebrated its 50th year of business, and since our establishment in 1973, we have very proudly been based within the Welwyn and Hatfield borough for the entire 50 years.
Like any business that has been operated for 50 years, there is of course a great story of how the business got to where it is today… And our is no different!
Establishment In 1973
T. & J. Fire Ltd was founded in 1973 by a father and Son duo, Trefor and John Rees. Both worked in Welwyn Garden City for Minimax, selling fire extinguishers until Trefor proposed that they started up their own business.
At the very start of the T.J. Fire & Security’s (then known as T. & J. Fire Ltd) business journey, Trefor’s wife Mary worked at the office, which was located in their Daniels home’s front bedroom while the extinguishers were kept in the garage. Three years later, in 1976, John’s wife Janet formally joined the company.
The business quickly advanced towards becoming FETA (Fire Extinguisher Trades Association), which was, at the time, the benchmark for excellence in the sector.
After their establishment, the businesses quickly began to work for many local businesses and organisations including Welwyn Hatfield Council, the original QEII hospital, Welwyn Department Stores, Shredded Wheat, Polycel, Advels, Roche, Nortons, British Aerospace and British Lead Mills… With some of the businesses still working with us to this day!
Expansion In The 1980s
With the business continuing to grow, we expanded our services, adding fire alarms and emergency lighting to the list of equipment we could install and supply in the last 1980s.
Due to this growth, T.J. Fire & Security also expanded the areas in which they serve – adding the likes of St Albans to the list of areas we served.
The Early 2000s And The Addition Of More Family Members
Natalie and Gavin, the children of John and Janet, both joined the company in the early 2000s after leaving careers in nursing and marketing, respectively.
John and Janet were supposed to retire after sharing all of their expertise and experience, but despite now enjoying their well-earned retirement, they continue to be a great resource for the company and frequently stop by the offices.
Once Natalie and Gavin were established, they saw an opportunity to grow the security element of the company by using the kindness of their already loyal fire clientele.
The decision was made to change our name to T. J. Fire & Security to better reflect the services provided, although the previous logo, which has the initials T & J interlocked, is still used today.
2019 And The Present Day
To further boost our local clientele, T. J. Fire & Security purchased Prompt Fire Protection in 2019; the company is also situated in Welwyn Garden City and we continue to look for ways to expand the business and create new partnerships.
Currently, T.J. Fire & Security are based in Martinfield Business Centre in Welwyn Garden City – working out of a large office space… Quite the upgrade from a bedroom and garage!
Our business offers a wide range of services, including installation, preventative maintenance, and callouts for fire extinguishers, fire alarms, intruder alarms, CCTV, access control, and fire door maintenance in both commercial and household markets.
These services are provided to workplaces and homeowners throughout Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the South East – with the business working with local businesses such as Welwyn Hatfield Council, St Albans District Council, University of Hertfordshire, McMullens, Simmons, Hatfield House, The Galleria and the Hertfordshire NHS.
