T. J. Fire & Security have this month been protecting an English Heritage property in Berkhamstead. The building had domestic detectors originally so we installed a new Advanced MX5 Fire Alarm System with expander wireless devices, ensuring the listed building has full fire cover while sympathetically maintaining the listed status.
Berkhamsted Castle was first built as a timber motte-and-bailey castle in the late 11th century. One of the most important early Norman castles, it controlled the northern approach to London, 30 miles away. Kept in royal hands, it was occupied by key figures of the Middle Ages, such as Thomas Becket, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, and the Black Prince. Much of its stone was plundered during the 16th century.
The building is steeped in history so it was a wonderful opportunity for us to work in here and tread in the same footsteps as William the Conqueror. For it was here with its links back to the 11th Century that the Anglo-Saxons surrendered to William, Duke of Normandy in December 1066 and he became William the Conqueror.
