As a fire protection company, we thought we would share with you some of the key fire and security equipment we think you should have in your home in order to keep you and your family safe.

Smoke Detectors

A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an indicator of fire. It will sound an alarm whenever there is a threat of fire in your property, allowing you to call the fire department and ensure that everyone gets out safely.

These are critical for the early detection of a fire in your home and could mean the difference between life and death. Fires can occur in any room, so having a smoke detector is the first key step towards your family’s safety.

Some benefits of a smoke detector are:

  • Helps keep you and your family safer- without a smoke detector in your home a fire can catch you by surprise. Having a reliable smoke detector installed in your home means the difference between getting out safely and getting injured or even dying in a fire.
  • Decreased risk of fire damage- you can avoid damage to your property by installing a reliable smoke detector in your property. You can respond promptly whenever there is a fire outbreak and put it out before it gets out of control.
  • Sends out alerts to many parties- smart smoke detectors can be set to automatically alert the relevant authorities in case of a fire outbreak.

Intruder Alarms:

Intruder alarms, also known as burglar alarms, are a visible deterrent, making potential intruders think twice before acting. They sound an alarm and/or notify a remote centre when someone has broken into the property.

They can help dissuade someone with potentially negative intentions from attempting to bring harm to your property, possessions and potentially you.

Here are some of the benefits installing an intruder alarm can bring:

  • Instant response- having a monitored intruder alarm system, a nominated key holder can be alerted or have the signal sent to an Alarm Receiving Cent (ARC). The ARC can then alert the key holder or initiate a police or security response.
  • Peace of mind- having an intruder alarm system can make you feel confident and secure when being away from your home. It’s good to know that your properties are being monitored even when you are not there!
  • Increases property value- home security is an attractive feature for prospective home buyers. Everybody wants to feel safe and secure in their home, meaning investing in a home burglar alarm will positively impact the value of your home when you come to sell.

CCTV Systems:

CCTV is video surveillance which uses cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place. It works by capturing a constant sequence of images and then transmits them to a display monitor where the sequence of images is demonstrated as video footage.

CCTV systems are designed to help prevent and detect. They act as a strong deterrent in keeping away crimes such as theft, vandalism and break-ins.

Here are some of the benefits of installing CCTV systems:

  • Heightened monitoring- gives you the ability to see everything within that area.
  • Maintain records- if something interesting happened, you always have a recording of it. Whether it’s a crime or simply just something you would like to be reminded of, you could easily consult your CCTV records.
  • Crime prevention- as previously mentioned, CCTV reduces crime by up to 50%. CCTV can undoubtedly help reduce crime rates, not just in public areas, but also in private spaces, such as homes and offices.

Fire Blankets:

A fire blanket is a safety device designed to extinguish incipient fires. It consists of a sheet of fire-retardant material that is placed over a fire to smother it.

A fire blanket can be used to both extinguish a small liquid/solid fire and also a person whose clothing has ignited.

Here are some benefits of having a fire blanket in your home:

  • Save lives- you can use a fire blanket to cover the area on fire but you can also use it to get out of a building that is on fire by covering your head.
  • Extinguishes outdoor fires- if an outdoor grill, candle or fire pit was to start or spread a fire having a fire blanket close by will easily and quickly put this out.
  • Protects infants and children- in case a fire breaks out where children are sleeping you can wrap a fire blanket around a child or baby to protect them. To reduce the risk of harm to a child or infant, there are special fire blankets that retail in baby supply stores and as fire safety companies.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors:
A carbon monoxide detector is a device that detects the presence of carbon monoxide gas to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

This warns you of any unusual build-up of carbon monoxide in your home.

Here are some of its benefits:

  • Early warning- CO detectors can detect trace amounts of gas. They are also loud, the piercing alarm can be heard throughout a home and can wake anyone who is sleeping.
  • The alarm will sound before anyone has symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning- this means no one will get injured or harmed.
  • Stability in changing environmental conditions- the electronics of carbon monoxide alarms are stable over changing temperatures and humidity levels. This prevents false alarms and protects internal components from failure.
